We've both always loved to travel, and even before we made the monumental decision to live and travel together, we had each seen a large part of the world.
BR (Before Richard), Eleanor visited all 10 Canadian provinces and lived in 4 of them. She's seen several of the US states, and taken winter holidays in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and Mexico. As a former military wife, she lived in Germany for 4 years, and took advantage of proximity and cheap military flights to explore western Europe, and to visit Morocco, Cyprus, and Lebanon. More recently, she's visited the UK a number of times and Japan twice, the first time to visit her son, Michael, and his wife, Izumi, and the second time to visit her new grandson, Oliver -the most beautiful, intelligent, and talented grandchild in the world....so far, at least!
BE, Richard lived and travelled in at least 10 US states and visited all 10 Canadian provinces. He lived in Britain for a year while doing his doctorate. He visited 18 countries, including the former Soviet Union, China (at the end of the Cultural Revolution), and Cuba (10 times since 1977), all long before travel to those countries was considered to be politically correct. In 2006 he spent a month in Vietnam, which had played a pivotal role in his personal, familial, and marital life.
Together, we've had beach holidays in Cuba and Mexico and spent a fabulous, exhausting month last fall in Greece (Athens, Mykenos, Paros, Santorini, and Crete) and Italy (staying in monasteries in Florence, Assissi and Venice). This just whetted our appetites for travel, and we've come up with our bucket travel list, below, for future trips. They're in no particular order and are always subject to revision, so if you have any recommendations, let us know! We realize that it's an ambitious list, but just think: when we're really old and living on cat food while we pay off our travel bills, we'll have wonderful photos and this blog to brighten our lives!
